I’ve never been much of a hiker. I love the outdoors, but I’m no camper, either. My idea of camping does not involve tents or fire pits or swatting mosquitoes all night. I did a lot of hiking and camping as a Scout in the 80s and even did Pike’s Peak in the 90s, but very little of my walking since then could be remotely categorized as ‘hiking’. A name change and a new direction…

Life is Lekker

Yes, folks, Stanford is still lekker. It’s wonderfully, deliciously lekker–even more so than when we moved here over four years ago. And I’ll continue to blog about this lovey little village in the Overberg. But I also want to expand my scope a bit and get back to writing more regularly, so I’ve changed the name to ‘Life is Lekker’ and plan to share more about life in general. Read more…

A delicious break at Yum!

Some afternoons just call for a tea party, and today was the day. I took my 9-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter and walked down to Yum! Eat Café, which is just around the corner from us. Yum! recently moved to the corner of Queen Victoria and Longmarket Streets after a total makeover of that space. The results are spectacular, as you’ll see in my photos. Read more…

How a Saturday went sideways…

Last Saturday, I had breakfast with a friend and one of my children at Graze (a Saturday tradition here), then went home to do some sewing while my little girls and the baby played. Everything was humming along nicely, but I kept having to walk around the rolling gas heaters we used in the winter and hadn’t put into storage yet. Every time I got up to iron a seam, I had to navigate around these things. I made a mental note to roll them both into the storeroom after I finished sewing. Read more…

Writing life…

The most important ‘writing’ I’ve done hasn’t involved a pencil, pen, or keyboard. It has been the daily writing into the lives of my children, who are my living letters to the world; stories that I’ve nurtured from babyhood onward and am often surprised to find have revised themselves rather beautifully in the process. Read more…
